I read the book in 2021 (15 years after publication) to improve my cognition of Chinese business culture (I am a professional investor). The book itself is meh. A few interesting stories but not much that was truly insightful. That said, the concluding affiliate - How to Make information technology in People's republic of china - is pure gold.

Chapter 12 is based on a confidential memo written by Kai-Fu Lee and shared with the authors. I would propose that this Chapter's lessons are equally applicable to today'southward China. It helped me to underst

A few interesting stories but not much that was truly insightful. That said, the final affiliate - How to Brand it in Mainland china - is pure gold.

Chapter 12 is based on a confidential memo written past Kai-Fu Lee and shared with the authors. I would suggest that this Chapter's lessons are equally applicable to today's China. It helped me to empathise the challenges that foreign companies encounter when trying to establish a business organisation presence in China. I was glad to have read the book just to take discovered this gem.

"Guanxi" is total of details related to how Chinese "Hai Gui" (pronounced hi gway, for sea turtles, which is the Chinese term for Chinese nationals returning to China) senior researchers help Microsoft build a R&D facility in China. The authors spend nigh of the time discussing the challenges these individuals had recruiting students, developing relationships with the Chinese government and Educational institutions while nevertheless keeping their eye on the prize of developing technology that would go far into Microsoft products for China and the globe.

The most famous private in this volume is non Bill Gates, information technology is Kai-fu Lee. The volume reveals how he gear up the tone for Microsoft to build the lab, and how his career advanced within MS until he jumped ship to back up Google'southward efforts to commencement a research lab in Cathay. This lead to a loftier profile lawsuit betwixt MS and Google, related to Kai-fu Lee's non-compete and non-disclosure clauses. In the stop, MS and Google came to closed settlement. Finally, I recommend that anyone representing a visitor's enquiry efforts in Mainland china read this book. It is quite insightful. For others that are interested in research and IT history, this book is an piece of cake read about how some of the latest engineering science is coming from Cathay and not the U.s.a..

This nagging feeling may be due to the fact the book describes the situation in China as information technology was in 2005, with Google simply entering the market. It'southward now 2015, Microsoft lost the search war ("what is Bing?"), both companies are still juggernauts, Kai-Fu Lee left Google too. Still, it would be fascinating to see what is currently happening in the Communist china labs. I can't help only call up later on finishing the book that something was missing - a disquisitional note perhaps? This nagging feeling may exist due to the fact the volume describes the situation in China as information technology was in 2005, with Google just entering the market. I read this book in November 2014. The volume was originally published 8 years dorsum, so reading the book is like seeing whether the 'plan to win the road ahead' succeeded for Microsoft. And then 8 years later, I am in the opinion that Microsoft lost the road ahead. To Google.

Betwixt all the books well-nigh doing concern in Cathay, this must be ane of the worst. Stylistically, it's closest to a school trip report. I got most 100 pages into it, but it was just unreadable, had to give up. Between all the books about doing business in China, this must be one of the worst. A swell example of how people who know zilch of Communist china, particularly business writers who know zero of People's republic of china, should be drug into the street and shot every bit presently as they say, "I am thinking about writing a book about Communist china."
